Adaptation involves changing overtime. As humans, we are incredibly adjustable and have the ability to change under difficult periods. It is a dynamic process, both inevitable and essential.
Artists are designed to change over time. Differences and changes in our environment, technology lifestyles provoke responses. That’s why UNA has decided to launch our first exhibition titled ‘Adaptation’ from 12-17 February 2022 in the beautiful space of The Storey Gallery. Concept: Adaptation can apply to many things. From a book to a film, of individuals to society, of organisms to their environment, etc. We have been made hyperaware of the adaptations we make to ever-changing situations through the restrictions put upon us, but also the creativity that comes from that limitation. As artists, how do we reflect and respond to our inconstant environment? Through limitation, what have you boiled down to be the very essence? |

Concept: The essence of TRANSIENT is to explore the connection between personal artworks and public spaces. The exhibition will move around the streets, shops and alleys of Lancaster, and also around the University campus. The plan is to exhibit your work amongst other applicants, through a projector in each of the seven chosen places, over a time period of seven days. The exhibition will be projected for one hour, each day. The locations chosen are public and private, accessible and non-accessible, and may be viewed by the public who happen to come across it. We will also be filming and streaming the hour-long exhibition on each of the seven days, via UNA’s Facebook and Instagram platforms for our virtual audiences. You can keep updated on the exhibition on our Instagram and Facebook, and you can experience the full exhibition virtually below. |

Up North Arts presents Past Forward, an exhibition exploring reactivated and recycled historical ideas, positioning them within a contemporary context. Showcasing Up North Arts Members and other featuring artists. The exhibition was shared between two spaces, a formal gallery at the top of the memorial, and the cafe located adjacent to it. This meant that viewers not only experienced the works in a white cube setting, but came across artwork in their daily lives. |
UNA presents Room With a View, a selection of work created by Up North Art's members. Submissions were open, and present the current work produced by the artist collective. The show exhibits a diversity of disciplines and an engaging array of approaches to contemporary practice.

Concrete Picnic is a group exhibition which sets a sit for a synthesis of lively thought and practical approaches within contemporary artistic practices. The exhibition ranges from smell-able art to sculpture, and from sound to expanded painting.
The show's aesthetic is informed by its site - an old furnace in which materials resonate with 1960s construction and architecture. Playfulness features within this exhibition; one side focuses on construction aesthetics, the other explores interactions that form and take place within the built environment. These topics allude to new and ongoing discussions around contemporary art such as the role of a medium, situation and interaction. See more photos from the exhibition HERE. |
Taking the form of a group show, a selection of artists from UNA comment on the condition of space and ownership: a foundation of the community. Within the show, the home transforms itself from living room, to gallery space and back again, settling in a midpoint where artworks and architecture collide. Ideas of homeliness are challenged by the art object, following the conventions of contemporary craft.
Through painting, photography, video and sound, the work infiltrates into the home, occupying the cracks and dispersing into spaces both architectural and digital. What is the importance of art's 'located-nedd' within architecture? How does living with an artwork affect experience? Home is where the Art is. |
